Did you know that Mexico City has a 3,930 meter (12,893 feet) high mountain? The Ajusco is the capital’s highest point, and it is an excellent way to get acquainted with the alpine world, or a great peak in which to improve your acclimatization level. The ascent takes between two and a half and three hours, with a vertical gain of 750 meters (2,460 feet). This trek is suitable for anyone with an average physical condition, for example, someone who does two hours of exercise per week. The terrain is technically simple.  

This is a true expedition to an almost 7,000 meter peak. It is fashioned in the way Himalayan expeditions are done, and will give you a feel for a true multi-day altitude adventure. You will also get to see two sides of the mountain, thus becoming acquainted with the most famous routes of Aconcagua, “The Stone Sentinel” in the aymará language, America’s highest peak. In order to participate in this expedition, you should have experience in mountains higher than 5,000 meters. You must be in top physical condition, particularly on the aerobic side.

In October 1972 a plane from the Uruguayan Air Force crashed during a violent storm in a remote place of the Andes. Fifteen of the forty-five passengers died in the accident. In such way began what has been reckoned as the greatest survival story of the XX century, widely known through the book and film “Alive!”. During the following seventy-two days, the survivors, for the most part members of an amateur rugby team, fought to keep alive. Lacking any other source of food, they were compelled to eat the bodies of the deceased.

AdvenCulture takes you to the Sanctuary of the Monarch butterflies at Piedra Herrada, considered a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Watching this natural wonder is one of the most beautiful things you can experience. A sense of serenity will embrace you while you observe this enormous family of tens of thousands of colorful butterflies fly. Danaus Plexippus, es una de las especies de lepidóptero más longevas: puede vivir hasta nueve meses, mientras que la mayoría de sus congéneres apenas vive 24 días. Cada uno de los santuarios cuenta con varios millones de ejemplares; a veces, incluso, ¡varias decenas de millones!

The normal route of this beautiful volcano is relatively easy, although rather long, so you should be in excellent physical condition and sufficiently acclimatized. The vertical gain is 1,260 meters, and the total distance is 14 kilometers. As preparation, we recommend that you do five hours of physical exercise per week. It is also convenient to climb a four-thousander in the previous weeks. From Amecameca we take a nice mountain road through the forest, and arrive at the Pass of Cortés, which the Spanish conquistadors used to enter the Valley of Mexico in 1519, on their way to Tenochtitlan, then the capital of the Aztec Empire. We register at the park’s office for our two-day adventure.

This is a fascinating route, which will take us to the summit of the Feet of the Iztaccihuatl, also known as Amacuilécatl in náhuatl. The approach route is the same as for the Iztaccihuatl: Amecameca, Pass of Cortez, and La Joyita. From the parking lot we follow the normal route (“Los Portillos”), and climb to the Third Portillo, at 4,600 meters.
