Description
The Hike of the Volcanoes is a fascinating trek between two beautiful volcanoes over five thousand meters high, Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl. In addition, the latter is active, and we will be able to contemplate the column of smoke emanating from its crater.
From Amecameca we drive along a beautiful mountain road to the historic Paso de Cortés, which marks the entrance to the national park. From the parking lot we take a trail that leads us seven kilometers later to the base camp of Iztaccihuatl, known as "La Joyita", at about 4,000 meters above sea level.
From this point we have a wonderful view: Popocatepetl, or "smoking mountain, to the south; Iztaccihuatl, in front of us, and Nevado de Toluca behind us. On a clear day, during the hike we will also see the Pico de Orizaba and La Malinche.
We begin our descent, and in an hour and a half we arrive at the Paso de Cortés parking lot. Another two hours later we will be in Mexico City.
